Sully Historic Site WWII ReInactment Sat and Sunday

Sully Historic Site hosts its annual World War II Weekend on Saturday, July 14, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, July 15, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Meet reenactors representing both Allied and Axis troops, and get an up-close look at what life was like for soldiers and civilians during the war years. Interpreters will have authentic uniforms, equipment, weapons and vehicles on display in their camps. Demonstrations will be scheduled throughout both days, and there will be a tactical skirmish each afternoon.

Tour the 1794 home of Richard Bland Lee and find out how things changed on the homefront during World War II in Fairfax County. Children can play games and create a take-home craft that highlights war-time recycling. Stop by Sully’s vegetable patch and hear about Victory Gardens. In the kitchen our costumed interpreter will have ration books, popular substitutions and canning equipment on hand.

On Saturday, Steven DeVito will speak about his book, “Fighting with the Filthy Thirteen – The World War II Story of Jack Womar – Ranger and Paratrooper.” This squad of the 101st Airborne Division was the inspiration for the movie, The Dirty Dozen. Author DeVito will be available to sign copies of the book after his talk.

Also on Saturday enjoy live music featuring all your favorite tunes from the 1940s.

The event will be held rain or shine. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for seniors and children. All veterans and active duty military with ID will be admitted free of charge.
