Local Charity Asks Public to Sponsor Families for #GivingTuesday

2,000+ Fairfax County Families Still in Need of Holiday Assistance

Help 2,000 Fairfax Families for Holidays; #GivingTuesday

FAIRFAX, VA. (December 2, 2013) – Fairfax-based non-profit Our Daily Bread, Inc. (ODB) is in urgent need of assistance from the public to “sponsor” or provide donations to assist needy individuals and families who reside in the Fairfax County area for December holiday meals and gifts for children. As #GivingTuesday approaches on December 3, the organization is asking community members to select its Holiday Program as their giving project of choice.

ODB operates its Holiday Program through a grant from the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services. Coordinating closely with social workers and community-based organizations who work with County residents in need, ODB works to ensure that as many eligible individuals and families as possible who have been identified as having a great need are able to receive holiday assistance.

The organization has 3,500 individuals and families on its holiday assistance list, and is still in need of community support to help 2,000 households, which include more than 5,000 children. Community members sponsored or provided donations to assist more than 1,200 families for Thanksgiving meals, but there is even greater need as the December holidays approach.

ODB Executive Director Lisa Whetzel said, “It is hard to imagine what it must be like for moms and dads in our community who are working several jobs – or struggling to find work – to see all this bounty around us and wonder whether they will be able to put food on the table or provide a gift or two for their kids. Our Daily Bread is so grateful to all the community organizations, individuals, families and businesses who have stepped up to help the neediest among us at this special time of year. We have typically served around 3,000 families, but the need is so great that we have made a commitment to help 3,500 this year. We are hoping that even more community members will hear our call for help and come together to make the season brighter for hard-working families who may otherwise go without holiday meals and presents for their children. It is a very special way to give, and a wonderful group project for families and friends as well as organizations and businesses.”

Those interested in sponsoring families for holiday meals and/or gifts may register at www.ODBFairfax.org through December 13 using ODB’s secure on-line registration form. ODB also greatly welcomes financial donations to help provide gift cards to families who are not sponsored. Donations may be made on ODB’s web site or by mail. While donations of any size will be happily accepted, $25 would provide gifts for a child or a holiday meal for a single adult; $75 would provide a nice meal for a medium-sized family; and $200 would provide a meal and gifts for children in a larger family. According to recent statistics from the national hunger awareness organization Feeding America, more than 76,000 residents in the Fairfax County area are “food insecure,” meaning they do not know where their next meal will come from. Fairfax County Public Schools estimates that approximately 46,000, or 24 percent, of its student population is qualified to receive free or reduced-price meals.

#GivingTuesday is a national movement to add a day of giving and service to follow up the “Black Friday”and “Cyber Monday” days of spending. Our Daily Bread is asking community members to share its #GivingTuesday page with their friends to spread the word about its Holiday Program: http://givingtuesday.org/partner/odbfairfax/. More information on #GivingTuesday is available at: http://givingtuesday.org.

Our Daily Bread utilizes volunteers and financial support from the community to help low-income residents and those experiencing a financial crisis in the Fairfax County area of Virginia achieve and maintain financial self-sufficiency. In addition to Holiday assistance, ODB provides qualified clients temporary food assistance, emergency financial assistance, financial education and mentoring services, the Project BRIDGE program that works with select clients in an intensive manner to help them achieve self-sufficiency, and Back to School assistance.
