Slipping The Cable launches author’s writing career

If you’ve ever suffered a nightmare boss and dreamed of putting him in his place — but could do no more than smile and take it — you can live vicariously through the main character in former Coast Guard officer Bill Schweigart’s new thriller, Slipping The Cable.

Schweigart’s novel follows Kelly Sensor, the Coast Guard cutter Sentinel’s newest junior officer as he navigates the ship’s political structure dominated by his captain, Aregood. Sensor and Aregood’s battle of wills escalates until it puts the Sentinel on a collision course with disaster. When Sensor hopes to escape to Key West, paradise quickly becomes a dead end when his vengeful captain pursues him.

After graduating from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, it was on a cutter (an ocean-going ship) where Bill’s story was born. Although it’s hard to remember exactly when the story hit him, Schweigart says it most likely happened while he was seasick.

“Being at sea was incredible, except when conditions made me wish I was somewhere else,” Schweigart said. “And when your head is in a toilet, you really wish you were somewhere else.” Schweigart reports that squeamish readers need not fear though: “This is a story for everyone. If you’ve ever had a toxic boss or dreamed of falling off the grid and starting over fresh, Slipping The Cable is for you.”

Schweigart, a New Jersey native, who now works for the Department of Homeland Security, lives in Arlington, VA with his wife Kate and daughter Sidney. He has two upcoming events in the DC Metro area for those who want to grab a signed copy or just swap sea stories. On Saturday, March 16, Schweigart will be signing at the Barnes & Noble’s Seven Corners location at 1:00 PM. Alexandria’s Beatley Central Library is hosting him as part of its Author Series on Tuesday, April 2 at 7:00 PM. In the meantime, Schweigart is busy polishing the draft of his second novel, The Beast of Barcroft, a supernatural thriller about a wooded Washington, DC suburb being attacked by “something.”
